F(r)ightfest
Tis the season for ghouls, goblins and tales of paranormal activity. People all over this country are allowed to become someone else for one night no matter how offensive or scant the costume. Adults and children alike take the time to knock on the doors of strangers to pan-handle for tricks and treats. Ahh yes Halloween, a Pagan holiday traditionally used to celebrate the spirits of the dead, that has been manipulated into a mid-year marketing mainstay to gear everyone up to spend money they don’t have. Don’t get me wrong, I too have enjoyed the occasional costume party and leftover confections , but not without feeling guilty about spending the money I didn’t have and eating (in the words of BrnSkn) white sugar crack. We all learn.
And A Little Child Shall Lead Them…
Early last week the world was introduced to a little brown Muppet girl who sang joyously about her hair and the great pride and freedom she had because of it. Her song was an innocent serenade and statement of love she had for herself and her crown and glory. The concept was created by Joey Mazzarino, head writer at the nationally syndicated children’s television show “Sesame Street.” Mazzarino and his wife adopted an Ethiopian girl who began saying negative things about her ethnic hair and comparing her hair to the long blonde hair of the dolls in which she played. (Writer’s Note: This adds to my reasoning of allowing my future children to only play with dolls of color.) The writer wanted to create a positive image for his young child to help her understand that her hair is uniquely wonderful, but most importantly it is hers to do with what she pleases, whether she wears it straight and silky, curly, or corn rowed, it is apart of her and is no less than that of her counterparts.
Test Tube Food- Yes, You Have The Right To Know.
While sitting down enjoying a homemade lunch I came a across an article in the Wall Street Journal about one of my favorite proteins, salmon. This fish is rich is Omega-3 Fatty acids, an excellent source of “good” cholesterol and other fats and can be prepared in hundreds of tasty ways. I honed in, expecting a matter-of-fact article further praising the health benefits of this animal. However, what I came to learn was that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is facing criticism from several consumer groups about the labeling of genetically modified salmon.
Oil Spills/Disasters
My cousin and I were discussing the recent BP (British Petroleum) oil spill and what BP was doing after the fact to fix the problem. Click here for more info. It led me to do some research and I included links to the articles, “Nigeria: Between the Gulf of Mexico and Niger Delta” and Niger Delta Spills. Apparently across the Atlantic, oil crisis has been going on for over 50 years. Quite shameful if you ask me. I must say that I do support President Obama in his conviction to make the oil companies pay for their transgressions. Read on and stay blessed.

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a non-profit organization that provides legal services and representation to economically disenfranchised defendants and prisoners who are or have been racially discriminated against by the United States Justice System. In addition to the litigation, the EJI also publishes reports, newsletters and other press-worthy materials for advocates and policy makers to drive change and reform.
