August R’ebel of the Month: Malcolm X

July R’ebel of the Month: Shirley Sherrod

After a carefully edited video excerpt of what most considered as racist hit the internet waves a week ago, Shirley Sherrod, ex-USDA director of the rural development office in Georgia, was immediately told to resign from her post. Due to blogger Andrew Breitbart TRYING to expose racism in the NAACP in retaliation attempts against their claims of racism in the Tea Party, Ms. Sherrod became a target of criticism from both sides of the political fence. Not until the proper due diligence was done (which was a couple of days later) was there an apology from the White House and “scaled back comments” from the NAACP. More details on her story here. RE-BEL

to resist or rise against authority, control, or tradition

Here at R’ebel Magazine we strive to create a place to express your inner worries or demons without judgment. April R’ebel of the Month: Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu has always been one artist encouraging people to “stay woke” and as a fan I’m TRULY INSPIRED. Her latest video for her single “Window Seat” has stirred up some controversy in the MEDIA. At the end of her video, she brought attention to the word “groupthink” (which means conformity, lacking individual creativity). Via twitter she described the overall message of her video being “character assassination due to mob mentality/groupthink.”

Since the MEDIA brought so much attention to it (hence distracting from real issues going on), she was fined for indecent exposure. BE CLEAR that no law enforcement was there PHYSICALLY to see her do it (but only going off the basis of “her tweets”). This dialogue between her and her followers has been nothing but enlightening. Groupthink was new to me but has been embedded in society for so long. It took a fearless sister to expose the realities of America being scared of “individualism”.
