“Legal” war on drugs?
The perceived “war on drugs” has been ongoing for 40 plus years with higher incarceration rates among Black and Hispanic men for petty drug charges.
“Media, misleading ya…”
As hip-hop artist Nas mentioned in his song “Sly Fox”, “don’t let the hype enter your eyes and eardrum…media misleading ya.”
I have to say I’ve been overwhelmed by everything going “wrong” in this country on the news front from the madness taking place with the Oscar Grant trial to the late Senator Robert Byrd’s affiliation to the KKK being lightly addressed.
Is media contributing to the HIV/AIDS pandemic?
Sheila Johnson, ex-owner of BET (Black Entertainment Television), aired out her thoughts about the current programming of her once “baby” and why she’s ashamed of it. Sheila Johnson says BET is “potentially contributing to the spread of AIDS by promoting promiscuous, unprotected sex in raunchy late-night rap videos.” Remember when BET used to air Uncut? Since bought by Viacom in 2000, the programming has been below sub-par in many viewers’ eyes.
“Reasonable suspicion” in the new Arizona immigration law
Arizona governor, Jan Brewer (R), recently passed an immigration law that will provide tougher sanctions for illegal border crossings. The bill will make it a crime to be in Arizona illegally and will allow police to “question” a person’s status if they have “reasonable suspicion”. It seemingly “encourages” racial profiling” although she claims racial profiling will not be tolerated. When asked what an illegal immigrant looks like, she couldn’t even answer the question.
United We Stand?
Earlier today I felt this overwhelming sense of frustration and sadness about my ethnic heritage. Don’t worry this is not one of those “I hate myself/my hair/my color” posts; but it is a post about the importance of finding out what it means to be on one accord as Human Beings and as children of the Spirit. Everywhere I turn, in real life, in the media, in my social networks, there is always some tool being used to separate people from one another. The running theme in America, especially, is “Us versus Them.” In our political systems (Democrats & Republicans), in our schools (Faith Based and Non-Faith), in our medical systems and financial systems (the haves and the have nots). It’s always about what you are, and not who you are.
