FILM REVIEW: Justice on Trial: the Case of Mumia-Abu Jamal

The case of Mumia Abu-Jamal is one of anger, frustration, corruption, struggle, unfairness, and more. A former Black Panther, journalist, world renowned author, and now a death row inmate for over 25 years, Mumia Abu-Jamal was convicted for allegedly killing white police officer,  Daniel Faulkner in Philadelphia in 1981. He was sentenced to death in 1982 yet there have been many irregularities to his case.

The documentary showed details of evidence being tampered with by the police, loopholes in the justice system, Philadelphia cops being indicted for corruption and brutality, and racial biases. Mumia Abu-Jamal was denied a jury of his peers and was assigned a judge who was overheard saying, “I’m going to help you fry that n*gger.” The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will continue doing everything they can to make sure their fellow comrade’s “death” is avenged.

What was most interesting about this documentary was not only did it offer both perspectives objectively but it revealed Philadelphia being the highest county to seek the death penalty in its state as well as Pennsylvania having the highest number of people on death row next to Texas. Who would’ve thought, the city of so-called “Brotherly Love”, seeking capital punishment so aggressively?

At the end of the documentary, we were able to have a short Q&A via phone with Mumia Abu-Jamal himself. Greeting us with the highest spirits, you could feel the energy in the room from his fellow Panthers and others there to support him. Hearing him speak reminded me of having a conversation with my favorite uncle, brother or friend. He left with the action to keep organizing not just on his behalf but on behalf of all injustices taking place in the world.

“ON THE MOVE, ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE” is what he recited before hanging up. To learn more about his case, go to www.freemumia.com.
