Dark Girls (documentary preview)
A friend sent this to me and I wanted to share. Within our culture and society, we have been taught to hate ourselves, including the color of our skin. Dark Girls is a documentary exploring the deeply rooted biases and attitudes about skin color, particularly dark skinned women within and outside the Black culture.
The Other Side of Vulnerability
On my spiritual journey of emotional maturity and evolution, I found myself on the other side of vulnerability, being radically expressive with my feelings.
Learning to be an emotional risk taker, I let go of my EGO. I opened my heart to an old friend with no expectations or conditions. I started sending him love letters (informing him of my randomness prior to). It was Russian roulette with my heart and I was conscioulsy aware of it. I didn’t know how he would respond but part of me didn’t care because I wasn’t doing this for him. I was doing this for me. For once in my life I wanted to give without EXPECTING anything in return. I wanted to be free from all emotional anxiety, societal expectations, and most importantly my self.
December R’ebel of the Month: Robert King
The story of Robert King is one of strength, courage, and inspiration. Having spent over 25 years in solitary confinement for a crime he did not commit, hearing him speak at the 3rd Annual Black Panther Party Film Festival was breathtaking. His spirit and mind seemed unbroken and more active than ever.
History Lesson: 3rd Annual Black Panther Party Film Festival
The 3rd Annual Black Panther Party film festival took place from December 8th-December 13th at Maysles Cinema in Harlem, New York. The festival screened various documentaries combined with archival footage on the legacy of the Black Panthers. Each film focused on different aspects of the fight against oppression, and the current issues faced today, including the injustices happening to political prisoners. Prominent guest speakers included Ward Churchill (Native American activist/author), Robert King (freed Angola 3), and Lumumba Bandele (Malcolm X Grassroots Movement). Empowering. Fearless. Unbreakable…the energy I felt each night being amongst past Panthers and current activists.
The Moon and Menstrual Cycles
Learning to understand myself physically and spiritually, I was intrigued by the connection between my body (the female body) and the moon. I never really considered how the moon affected my emotions before, let alone my body. I understood my cycle as a cleansing period but because of the harmony and flow, this is also a time for introspection and re-evaluation.
